The Photoblog of Jay Williams

I’ve always been a little fanatical about music, even from a very young age. Thanks to my parents, I grew up listening to a wide variety of musical styles, and as I’ve grown older, my love for music hasn’t died down, in fact, it’s only intensified.

Which brings me to the subject of this week’s post, Josh Garrels. When a friend recommended that I check out his music, I had my doubts. But my curiosity was piqued when the friend couldn’t define what genera his music fits into. (Yes, I like artists that don’t trap themselves in industry defined musical boxes.)

After watching these two videos, I was completely convinced, this guy is a musical genius! What’s funny is, upon first listen, I wasn’t all that impressed, yet the more I listened to his music, the more nuances I picked up, the more depth I found, and the more beauty I could hear.

The large majority of music produced today is designed for casual listening. It’s not particularly deep, either musically or lyrically, however Josh Garrels’ music is a perfect example of what can happen when you mix the the artistry of music with deeply heart-felt words. The message is so true—it hits you right in the soul.

That being said, when he visited Birmingham two weeks ago, my wife and I bought our tickets in advance. And it was a good thing too, because the concert sold out!
