I See You

I See You

Details & Comments

I was able to photograph the NASCAR Amp Energy 500 race at the Talladega Superspeedway last Sunday. This was my first NASCAR event to photograph, so I learned a lot. I’ll be posting various photos from the race on the Addendum blog, so be sure to check that out in the next day or two.

But during the long wait for the race to begin, I took the opportunity to rome around and attempt to take some artistic photos. As soon as I arrived at the race track and saw the ginormous spectator stands, I knew I had to get some photos of them. And sure enough, early on Sunday, with my 70-200mm lens and 2x extender (140-400mm), I took some photos of the early bird spectators. The photo above is one of my favorites out of the set. And to help emphasize the person rather than the colors of the seats, I converted the image to Black & White in Lightroom.

I like this shot, especially in black and white. In color, the different colors in the chairs and the clothes the person was wearing, would otherwise distract from the symmetry of this scene. The lone person in the stands does a nice job in breaking the scene up a little. Good job!

What. A. Shot.

I think it'd look questionably surreal if all of the seats appeared white; the other colours set the whole image off wonderfully. As for the spectator: the placement in the composition, the fact that they're alone among all those empty seats, it all came out so well I'd say it looks set up!

The only way to convey my love of this photo is to say that it's most definitely my favourite DView post to date. Great work Jay.
